Recommended Age: 2 and ½ and onwards
Level of Parent Involvement: Medium to set up the materials then, low when the child works independently (assisting with spills/pack up if necessary)
Prerequisites
- None
Materials
- Tray
- Small container to put pieces of paper
- Small glass jar with a small amount of PVA or clear gum glue
- Thin paintbrush or glue spreader
- Small sponge to wipe away any drips or spills
- paper for pasting onto (A5 is ideal)
Preparation:
- Set up the pasting tray with the jar of glue, the paintbrush/glue spreader, sponge and paper
- Cut up small pieces of paper and place into a container
Steps:
- Invite the child letting them know “today I am going to show you how to do pasting”
- The child may use cut pieces of paper from their own cutting activity or paper in the container which you have prepared
- The child may bring the tray to the table
- Sitting to the right of the child place the piece of paper on the table in front of you
- Pick up a piece of the cut paper and choose where to put it on the paper, turn the cut paper over
- Take the brush/glue spreader and dip it into the glue
- Wipe any excess glue from the brush/glue spreader onto the side of the jar
- Apply the glue to the piece of cut paper, ensuring the entire surface is covered
- Place the brush/glue spreader back in the jar
- Flip the piece of cut paper over and press the paper down to glue into position
- Repeat as above for another 1-2 pieces
- Invite the child to continue or the child may start their own
- At the end you may show the child how to wipe up any glue with the sponge
- Write the child’s name on the paper or child may do so if they are able
- Show the child where to put the paper to dry

- Provide the child with different mediums for pasting such as patty pans, icy pole sticks, aluminium foil, card board etc
