Prerequisites
- None
Materials
- Coloured chalk
- Mortar and pestle
- Water
- Small jug
- Paint brush
- Small cups for the different coloured paints made
Preparation
- None
Steps
- Invite the child letting them know that you are going to show them how to make chalk paint
- Bring the materials to the table, the child may help
- Name the materials (mortar and pestle, chalk etc)
- Let the child know that they need to put the chalk into the mortar and use the pestle to crush the chalk
- Take a piece of chalk
- Demonstrate how to move the pestle up and down to crush the chalk into a dust
- Transfer the dust into a cup
- Invite the child to pour a small amount of water from the jug into the cup
- The child may now use the paint brush to mix the dust into a smooth consistency
- The child may now take a different coloured piece of chalk and use the pestle to crush the chalk, making another coloured paint
- When finished, go with the child outside, bringing the chalk paint
- Invite the child to paint the concrete or another appropriate space outdoors (fence, deck etc)
- When finished you may show the child how to wash the chalk paint away or let the child know that when it rains the rain will remove the chalk paint
