Recommended Age: 4 and ½ to 5 and ½ years
Purpose: To consolidate linear counting and to show the child skip counting.
Level of Parent Involvement: Medium, the adult must present the exercise to the child first, once shown the child may work independently.
Prerequisites
- The child must be able to recognise the numbers and quantities of numbers up to ten
- The child must have worked with the teen beads and boards and can count onwards from ten
- The child must have worked with the ten’s beads and boards
Materials
- A chain of 100 golden beads, a 100 square and labels OR the paper version with labels included in resource pack
NOTE: if using paper version at home, you bring the materials to the table, skipping the steps in a normal classroom setting where the child is shown how to carry the chain at the bead cabinet
Preparation
- None
Steps
- Invite the child to the activity, the child may bring a mat
- Show the child the materials needed at the bead cabinet (labels and 100 bead square)
- The child may bring them to the mat, go back and show the child the 100 chain, showing them how to carry it (vertically)
- Invite the child to carry the chain to the mat, assisting them to lay the chain on the mat (horizontally)
- Tell the child that “if you stretched out the 100 square it would look like the chain”
- Fold the chain, with each fold counting 1 ten, two tens, 3 tens etc… until you get to 10 tens, telling the child that “10 tens is 100”)
- Superimpose the 100 chain on top to show it is the same, then take it off
- Unfold the chain and invite the child to fold and count in the same way
- Introduce the labels to the child, noticing the different colours
- Invite the child to sort the labels into their respective colours
- Count and touch each bead 1-10, placing the green labels with their corresponding number from 1-9 (see photo)
- When you get to ten let the child know from here on there is only a label for the last bead on each bar
- Count onwards from 10, once at 20 place the label
- Count on to 30
- Invite the child to take over, or you do all, then remove the labels and invite the child to do all
- Once the 100 label is placed, put the 100 bead square at the last increment of ten (refer photo)
- Remove labels from chain, child may sort, count and relabel chain independently
